The Minerals Heritage Museum has two great displays within Brisbane! The Minerals Heritage Museum (MHM) aims to preserve, display and educate the public about beautiful crystals and minerals. We aim to concentrate on Queensland and Australian minerals. The MHM have teamed up with the Queensland Museum (QM) and the Brisbane Opal Museum (BOM) to create two wonderful colourful displays of rare minerals and crystals. Entry to view our displays at QM is free and at the BOM a nominal fee.
"Crystals, Minerals, Gems" conjure up different images for different people. What are these strange objects? They combine incredible beauty and sometimes high value. They can be common or incredibly rare. They may appear to be so perfect in their shapes as to appear "supernatural".
Some glisten with geometric perfection. Above all, these strange objects are unique, and they form part of our natural heritage. Fine mineral specimens are a finite and rapidly disappearing resource and need to be protected as much as any work of art. Countless millennium have passed since these objects were formed beneath the earth's crust, but their fragile perfection can be easily destroyed in seconds. Modern mining techniques makes this outcome almost inevitable. Our MHM displays encompass a small but important part of our natural heritage that has been saved from destruction. A dedicated group of enthusiasts, aided by benevolent collectors and visionary mining companies have made our museum collection and display possible. Please enjoy our collection, and contemplate these amazing wonders of nature! Hon.
Trustee and honorary Curator of the MHM, Tony Forsyth (L) and Honorary
Trustee The MHM has a permanent display of high-quality mineral specimens available for viewing on the mezzanine floor of the Queensland Museum, Southbank, Brisbane, Queensland. The display consists of five large vertical display cabinets and three desktop cabinets. The numerous high quality colourful specimens comprise the best public mineral display in south-east Queensland. We would love to see you visit! We hope to expand the display and it will remain in place until at least 2024. From time to time we also mount displays at other venues, so refer to this website for news and information. Entry and viewing of our display is free!
